Tornadoes are one of the most violent weather phenomena on Earth. They are dangerous and scary, and tornado warnings should always be taken seriously. If you hear tornado sirens near you, immediately take shelter in a basement or an interior room in your house.
Tornadoes develop when a violent column of rapidly rotating wind extends out of a thunderstorm. They occur in many parts of the world, but the United States experiences more tornadoes than any other country, about 1,200 each year. In the Midwest, June and July are considered tornado season, but tornadoes can occur at any time of year. They can develop during severe storms at any time of day or night, but they most often occur between 4 and 9 p.m.
